Quick intro.

This is the Trade PA blog. We'll use it to write about the bits of running a trade business nobody else writes about. CIS, and how to actually work out what's been deducted. VAT, and when the domestic reverse charge applies. RAMS. When you actually need them. Mileage. Materials. The maths of pricing a job. Chasing money. Evenings.

A few rules we'll stick to:

  • Plain English. If you'd say it on site, we'll say it here.
  • No filler. Three paragraphs is better than ten if three does the job.
  • Written by people who've been on the tools, or close enough that they shouldn't be telling you how to do yours.
  • No "industry experts." No "thought leadership." No "ten things you didn't know about CIS."

If there's something you've always wanted explained properly, drop a note to hello@tradespa.co.uk and we'll work it into a post. Awkward customer situations, CIS scenarios that don't fit the textbook, the bit of the tax stuff the accountant gives you a confused look at, anything.

Coming up first: why we built Trade PA, why tradies don't get paid for evenings, and a proper guide to CIS for subbies.

Why I built Trade PA

A few years running a small building firm, evenings lost to the laptop, no app that quite fit. Then voice AI got good enough.

Tradies don't get paid for evenings

Your day rate covers tools-down time, not the laptop hours afterward. The maths nobody talks about.
