ServiceM8 alternatives for UK trades in 2026: an honest look

When ServiceM8 is still the right answer

For an iPhone-based service business, ServiceM8 is worth testing before you decide to leave. The free plan covers one user and 30 new jobs a month. Paid plans start at £25 for 50 jobs with unlimited users; £59 covers 150 jobs. Those are UK monthly prices before VAT. Count job cards rather than completed visits when comparing your workload. When it stops fitting

Android in the van. ServiceM8 is optimised for Apple and openly recommends iPhones and iPads to get the most out of it. There is now a cut-down "ServiceM8 Lite" for Android aimed at field techs and subbies who just need the basics, so Android is not locked out, but the full app experience still lives on Apple. If your business runs on Android, check exactly what the Lite app does and does not do before you commit, because that gap is the kind of daily friction that quietly kills a system.

The UK tax plumbing. ServiceM8 grew up in Australia and New Zealand. It has a UK presence, but UK-specific machinery, CIS deductions when you pay subbies, the domestic reverse charge on VAT, the deduction statements subbies are owed, is exactly where you should test hard before committing your accounts to it. Job-count pricing cuts both ways. The model that makes it cheap at low volume makes it climb as your job count grows. Lots of small fast jobs, the classic sparky or plumber week, pushes you up the tiers even though each job is tiny. Price the tier your real month needs, not the entry number.

AI needs a proper comparison. ServiceM8 advertises writing assistance, quote and invoice drafting, and a voice assistant. It is not accurate to describe it as manual-only. Try the same instruction in both systems, then inspect the customer, amount, saved record and approval steps. The useful difference is what works for your jobs and devices.

The alternatives, honestly

Switching without losing your history

Export before you cancel: customers, job history, invoices, whatever ServiceM8 will give you as CSV. Import into the new system and run the two side by side for a week rather than cutting over cold. Then apply the only test that matters: one real job, quote to paid, through the new system on a normal working day.
